Depending on the climate of the area each store is in, the right time to start merchandising and promoting sun care products differs. However, as consumers become more concerned with caring for their skin, offering products early in the season, with some available all year, is an important tactic.

“We start merchandising sun care right after Christmas for our most southern stores, and most others are set before Easter,” spokeswoman Maria Brous at Publix Super Markets in Lakeland, Fla., told SN.

Buehler's Food Markets, Wooster, Ohio, carries some sun care year-round and starts actively promoting in mid-March,” said spokeswoman Mary McMillen.

For Bashas' Markets, Chandler, Ariz., sun care is set out the third week in February to prepare for baseball spring training, said Sue Vodika, HBC buyer and category manager. “The biggest promotion we have for sales is Memorial Day. After that sun care is soft as we get our hot weather in late April early May.”
