Technology has helped Buehler's Food Markets free up enough pharmacy staff time that pharmacists are now able to generate additional revenues by counseling patients on medication therapy management, said Verne Mounts, director of pharmacy and health services the Wooster, Ohio-based chain.

That task is being facilitated by the company's participation in two electronic networks: the National Community Pharmacists Association's Mirixa network of MTM-trained pharmacists, and GetOutcomes' MTM pharmacist network. Both networks help pharmacists connect to patients in their markets who need medication management services. NCPA is based in Alexandria, Va., while Get Outcomes is a service provided by Des Moines, Iowa-based Outcomes Pharmaceutical Health Care.

“When these networks identify a patient that our pharmacists are linked to, they notify us, and after we get the details about the patient and their condition, we contact the patient and invite them to come in to go over their issues,” Mounts said.”

Buehler's pharmacists then consult with the patient's physicians and document the care they provide, receiving a fee for their services.
