SAN ANTONIO — H.E. Butt Grocery Co. here will start selling digital television converter boxes in its stores starting April 1, according to a report in the San Antonio Business Journal. H-E-B is also is launching a new statewide “awareness initiative” about the upcoming all-digital TV conversion in early 2009: the federal government will offer two converter box coupons for $40 each to each U.S. household and those can be redeemed at any participating H-E-B store. H-E-B will sell converter boxes for $40, along with HD antennas, cables and remotes. Nationally, the National Association of Broadcasters is urging the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to consider ways to allow grocery stores to sell coupon-eligible digital-to-analog converter boxes, especially stores in rural areas, which would ensure more viewers have easy access to upgrade their TV sets to digital.
