Associated Wholesale Grocers, Kansas City, Kan., has presented its annual Lou Fox Community Service Award to Charles Fowler, owner of Consumers IGA in Stillwater, Okla., in recognition of his service and involvement to the local community.
Fowler was cited for his community efforts in Stillwater, including support of local sports teams; food donations for local schools; and support for Oklahoma State University, where he provided shopping carts to help students moving into the dorms.
Fowler originally joined Consumers IGA as store manager in 1963 and acquired it in 1994.
The award, established in 2002, is named for Fox, who joined AWG in 1956, was president and CEO from 1968 through 1983 and who was instrumental in the enactment of backhaul legislation in the 1970s that allowed empty trucks that had delivered their cargoes to pick up merchandise from manufacturer warehouses they passed on their way back.
