The State of Independent Food Retail

This session, presented by Jerry Garland, president and CEO, Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc., will offer his insights into what occurs at the key intersection between retailers and suppliers in the industry and the importance of wholesalers to the vitality of independent retailers. Through the eyes of a cooperative, Garland will offer perspectives on how to best address the challenges and seize the opportunities facing the industry and he will describe the important role he and his wholesaler colleagues can play in preparing independent retailers for the future.

Facing the Future: A Panel of Young Leaders

Facilitated by Thom Blischok of Booz and Co., this panel of young manufacturer and retailer executives and CEOs will discuss the four key trends affecting our industry today: 1) a long-term shift in consumer behavior toward value-seeking 2) technology-enhanced shopping 3) the growing impact of e-commerce and 4) growth of small format stores. Looking ahead to the next decade, we’ll ask the panelists how they think shoppers will change, what capabilities will be needed to successfully compete, and what type of organizations are likely to come out on top.
