Amazing. In a period of a couple of years, I talked to people in several southern states and all, yes all, spoke fondly of. A & P...nostalgically. Almost to the point they wished they were back. They all remembered some A & P brand names i.e. jane Parker and Ann Page and most were surprised to learn a foreign company owns the Eight 'O Clock Coffee brand! A few even recalled the "Our Own Tea" brand which I had forgotten. So all this tells me that A & P has been terrible mismanaged to say the least and the worst thing to happen to the A & P folks was to be acquired by IMHO Tenglemann who never invested in the stores, never folowed thru on initiatives, never took the time to study and understand the American market like for example Aldi has and has successfully. All they did again this is my opinion watching on the sidelines is destroy an Ameican icon, sell off for a song their well-know coffee business, eliminate their house brand names which consumes recognized and took lve successful chains and destroyed them as well. These are my lbservations and make for an excellent case study for a university marketing class. Yes, A & P has almost all unionized employees but so does Kroger. And, Kroger has made many acquisitions as has A & P ... The difference? Look inward and look upwards. JMO.

This company is dead. They have no money to do anything and the are heavy with disgruntled employees who make top dollar and feel as if they are entitled. They are ignorant of the fact that the company is in deep financial straits and somehow think a buyer is coming to bail them all out and save them not realizing the buyers will finagle to dump them all and their high salaries and if they are hired back it will be for way less and less benefits. The company can't survive with its current labor rate. I don't see them lasting very long in their current condition!........Adios!!

It could happen if they knew what to do with the chains they own....but they don't so don't even go there!

It will cease by Early 2016/Late 2015. What I think will happen is that the first %5 stores to go will be Super Fresh. 48% Of stores will be sold to Wakefern, etc. 47% of stores will be closed.

Convert all units to Food Basics and then be acquired by Lidl

They can't do that because when they sold the canadian division to Metro they sold away the Food Basics name sake. So the stores they have, thats it!

Wouldn't you like to be a fly on the wall at Sam Martin's home? Wonder what he knows about A&P's presumed fate?

I'm hoping somebody with Supermarket knowledge and Deep Pockets comes to the rescue and buys the whole company. Having "Knuckleheads" running things has gotten us deeper into a hole that we can't seem to or want to get out of.

Will keep cutting labor, not have enough of the supposed sale items on hand and finally get rid of stores little by little. No clue how to run supermarket.
