Safeway's problem is they buy chains and it's their way or the highway. Well, customers left in droves because they wanted to still shop in a Dominick's Genuardi's etc. not a Safeway. Next up, Texas where like Dominick's and Genuardi's, they'll have to sell them piecemeal and dark leases on the others and Randall's like Dominicks, like Genuardi's will disappear.
I will see if Kroger,Walmart,buys Dominicks Stores. I worked for Dominicks for 22 yrs.
Randall's / Tom Thumb next? All three of the late 90's acquisitions made by Safeway went sour. Raising prices and reducing employees on the sales floor does not work with these regional grocers who have a loyal following. They were all known for fair prices and great customer service. The loyalty goes away when the prices skyrocket and customer service evaporates.
Marshall Fields was even much more popular here in Chicagoland, and look what happened to it. This is what happens when investors take over a great family-owned entity and mess it up, by lowering standards on products and increasing prices and mistreating its dedicated workforce. Thank You so very kindly for publishing my reply.
Safeway will destroy another banner just like they have Genuardi's which used to be a class operation.
I would think that Bob Mariano would be making a big play for some of the better stores since he knows the market better than most and he needs a store count of 25 or more under his banner to be viable in the market....this would help jump start him on the way...
R. Marianos should buy the original omni stores only. and bring back omni big box stores. ;
