SEATTLE -- Distributor consolidation in the periodical industry has continued with Adams News, a magazine wholesaler here, the latest casualty after 70 years of operation.
Mike Kelly, Adams News president, said in published reports, "It was the right time to exit the industry." The family-owned company employs 117 people.
The News Group, a subsidiary of Jim Pattison Group, Vancouver, British Columbia, has been acquiring wholesalers in the Northwest, and is negotiating for additional news distributors, including Bay News, Portland, Ore.
Retailers said the move indicates that consolidation among magazine wholesalers continues to unfold.
"This seems to be part of the consolidation trend by magazine wholesalers that's still under way," commented Rob Sande, a nonfood buyer at Carr Gottstein Foods, Anchorage, Alaska, whose stores are supplied by The News Group.
