FreshWorld 96 Set for February

ted Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association here is sponsoring FreshWorld 96, the International Fruit and Vegetable Exposition and Conference, Feb. 24 to 26 in New Orleans.

FreshWorld 96 will run from Saturday through Monday, which is a first for the association. Previous United conventions ran from Sunday through Tuesday.

The new schedule is meant to eliminate the time participants need to be away from business.

"Putting FreshWorld 96 on a Saturday, Sunday, Monday schedule will draw in a large weekend crowd and increase the number of people on the trade show floor," said Terry Williams, co-chairman of the convention and a sales representative for Jimbo's Jumbos, Edenton, N.C.

The United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association is an international trade association representing the fresh produce industry.

Tomato Offers 'Homegrown' Taste

RIVERVIEW, Fla. -- Gourmet Gardens here has introduced a tomato to local supermarkets that it claims has a "homegrown" taste.

Gourmet Gardens said it leaves the tomatoes on the vine an extra 10 days to assure optimal flavor. Gourmet Gardens' tomatoes are packed and shipped with the calyx attached, and each tomato carries a sticker that guarantees freshness.

According to spokesman Joe Gunter, Kash n' Karry Food Stores, Kroger Co., Winn-Dixie Stores and Publix Super Markets units in Florida currently are carrying the tomato.

According to one Publix produce manager, customers are specifically asking for the Gourmet Gardens tomato.
