TUCSON, Ariz. — John Elden Burwick, a longtime industry executive dealing with retail technology, lost his battle with cancer on Feb. 22. Born in 1947, Burwick spent 21 years with Kroger, where, as general manager of merchandising and systems technology, he worked closely with such companies as Nabisco, Procter & Gamble, Kraft Foods, IBM and NCR. Later, he was senior vice president of business development for Efficient Market Services (ems), a provider of technology solutions to enhance consumer demand in the retail and consumer packaged goods industries. He most recently worked for TCI Solutions here as business development officer. Burwick was a frequent participant in industry initiatives, share groups and committees, including the ECR Technology committee and the UCSII and UCS standards committees. He served on Procter & Gamble's Logistics Group and on RJR Nabisco's Retail Advisory Council, was a member of advisory boards for numerous retail software providers, and consulted universities on technology issues facing the retail industry.
