WEST NYACK, N.Y. -- The deli and hot food counter at the recently renovated Grand Union supermarket here had a new element last weekend: a large backlit sign over the cases identifying the department as "The Best Takeout Restaurant in Town."
am shells and individual desserts. On the first of three tiered shelves were sub sandwiches for $2.99 and $3.99. On the next shelf up were three types of Caesar salad: plain, $2.99; with smoked turkey, $3.99; with grilled chicken, $4.99. On the top tier were a brand of individual cheese cakes and single servings of chocolate pudding and tapioca pudding that looked store-packed.
In the chilled service case, meat loaf was $4.99 a pound; grilled chicken cutlets were $2.99 each. Salads in long trays in that case had product cards that said, "Made in Store." Most were $3.99 a pound. They included Shanghai noodle salad, Oriental green beans, Caribbean bean salad, and tomato and mozzarella salad. The macaroni salad, at $1.99 a pound, also had a "Made in Store" sign.
The chain's E-Z Meals test program was not in evidence in the deli. Behind the chilled counter, a small prep area was visible.
