SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — Village Super Market here has elected five new members to its board of directors: Peter R. Lavoy, Stephen F. Rooney, Nicholas Sumas, John J. Sumas and Kevin Begley. Lavoy has 40 years of retail experience in New Jersey and retired recently as president and chief operating officer from Foodtown, a cooperative grocery chain. Rooney has been a financial analyst with Standard & Poor's asset-backed securities group for the past 13 years and previously focused on retail lending as an officer with CoreStates Bank. The three other new directors are company employees. Nicholas Sumas has served as vice president since 2007 and has held a range of positions since his employment with the Village in 1994. John J. Sumas has been head of Village's legal department since 2002, and was appointed general counsel in 2007. Begley has served as chief financial officer since 1987 and as treasurer since 2002.
AMSTERDAM — Ahold last week said Peter Wakkie has decided to retire from Ahold, effective Dec. 31, 2009. Wakkie, 60, is chief corporate governance counsel and a member of the Ahold corporate executive board. He joined Ahold in October 2003 following a 31-year career at the Dutch legal firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek. Initially, Wakkie was involved in managing the multiple investigations and lawsuits that Ahold faced in the wake of its 2003 financial implosion, and he was tasked with establishing a better corporate governance structure. Since then, he was heavily involved in Ahold's divestment program and was chief architect of the company's corporate responsibility strategy. “Peter's contribution and support during his time at Ahold have been invaluable,” said John Rishton, chief executive officer, Ahold. “He has been a pivotal member of our executive board and has played an enormous role in shaping Ahold's strategy for sustainable profitable growth.” Ahold said it will nominate a successor later this year.
DEERFIELD, Ill. — The Walgreen Co., based here, last week said it hired two new executives from Wal-Mart Stores and another from Kraft Foods. Shannon Petree has been named general merchandise manager for beauty and personal care; and Eddie Frail was named general merchandise manager for seasonal and general merchandise. Both had been with Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart. In addition, Walgreens confirmed that it has named Maurise “Moe” Alkemade general merchandise manager for private brands. He is a 14-year veteran of Kraft Foods.
