MATTHEWS, N.C. — Harris Teeter has agreed to refrain from using great apes in its advertising following pressure from an animal rights group. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in a press statement Tuesday said that Harris Teeter, a division of Ruddick Corp., has pledged not to use apes in its ads, a practice PETA said is “inherently cruel.” Harris Teeter in 2007 ran a promotion that featured a chimpanzee.
