ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Pharmacy is extending beyond its traditional areas of operation with an online pharmacy and free shipping service.
“Don’t want to stop at the store to pick up your prescription? You don’t have to anymore. With free home shipping you can have your prescription from a Wegmans Pharmacy sent to you anywhere in the United States,” says Wegmans in a promotional video.
The delivery service is accessible via the retailer's new Wegmans Pharmacy Online, which enables users to sign in, refill a prescription, check their order status, and set up automatic refills on their desktop.Mobile and app users will still be able to order refills via their mobile device, but the most feature-rich experience can be had via computer, according to Wegmans.
The retailer expects the service to be popular with Wegmans customers who spend their winters in warmer southern states.Standard delivery (5-10 business days) is free, express delivery (1-2 days) is $18.95.
“I’ve heard from many ‘snowbird’ customers about how much they wish they had Wegmans down in Florida or North Carolina where they spend their winters,” said Mary Ellen Burris, vice president of consumer affairs in a Fresh Stories blog post. “Now, wherever you are in the U.S. our new Free Home Shipping service for prescriptions gives you a convenient way to experience that same great service you’ve come to know in our pharmacies.”
A “check order status” feature is expected to cut down on pharmacy calls.
“Our folks tell me that about one-fourth of the calls to the pharmacy are to keep track of orders in process, so this simplifies your need to know,” Burris said.
Upon initial sign up, shoppers must undergo a one-time identity verification to ensure the privacy of their records. Wegmans Pharmacy Online users can only access their personal records and those of dependents under age 18. A patient cannot access their spouse's records at this time.
Patients interested in filling a new prescription must mail the original prescription sheet with a new prescription form, or have their doctor submit the prescription electronically.
