For the five weeks ending July 7, Costco said total sales increased by 8% to $9.9 billion from the same period last year. U.S. sales were strongest in Texas, the Midwest and Southeast, and included mid-single-digit increases in food and sundries and mid-to-high single digit comparable increases in fresh food sales.
The International Council of Shopping Centers, New York, said Thursday that its index of U.S. chain stores combined to post 3.9% same-store gains in June — the strongest gain since January’s 4.5% increase. Excluding drug stores, sales increased by 5.3%, ICSC said.
Drug chain Walgreens reported monthly comps of 2.3% and Rite-Aid said comps improved by 0.7% in June. Both chains cited negative effects of generic drug introductions.
