LAKELAND, Fla. — For the eighth consecutive year, Publix Super Markets has been named one the top workplaces for information technology professionals by IDG's Computerworld, ranking 88th out of 100. It was the only food retailer on the list.
The 19th annual Best Places to Work in IT list was published in the June 18 issue of Computerworld and online at www.computerworld.com. The list was based on a questionnaire regarding company offerings in diversity, career development, training and retention. In addition, Computerworld conducts surveys of IT workers, and their responses factor in determining the rankings.
“The list of IT accomplishments at this supermarket operator in Lakeland, Fla., is long,” said Computerworld. “In 2011 alone, IT employees delivered new Web and mobile applications; a suite of HR self-service tools; a new scheduling, time and attendance system; and technologies to optimize product assortments to match customer demographics.”
The magazine reported that Publix employs 1,055 people in its IT department (out of 151,000 employees), including 28% women and 24% minorities. In 2011, IT employee turnover was 7% while promotions were given to 5% of IT employees.
"Our I/S associates' contributions and commitment to premier service make our department and Publix a great place to work," said Publix’s Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President Laurie Douglas, in a statement.
