Having Herring’s input is critical to the professional development organization’s growth, said Peggy Davies, WISE chair, and vice president of vegetable business and industrial sales for McCain Foods USA.

“We’re an industry organization; we’re not just for manufacturers,” Davies told SN. Herring’s appointment comes at a time when the group celebrates its one-year anniversary at this year’s Private Label Manufacturers Association’s store-brand show, which kicked off Sunday and runs through Tuesday.

WISE has a booth at the show, and is holding its annual meeting at the event. The group, now about 170 members strong, has been quite busy over the last year, said Davies. It has held professional development events; aligned with DiversityInc. Media for diversity training; and launched a newslettter, Wise World.

It also recently held a networking event in two markets: one at Wakefern Food Corp.’s Keasbey, N.J., headquarters, and another at the headquarters of Federated Group, a private-label sales and marketing company in Chicago.

“We are gaining a foothold in the industry,” said Davies.
