16 E. Coli Illnesses Connected to Wegmans Salad Mixes

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Sixteen E. coli illnesses have been reported in New York associated with salad mixes sold at Wegmans Food Markets, the retailer announced.

In response, Wegmans has recalled 31,000 pounds of Organic Spinach and Spring Mix salads sold in 5-ounce and 11-ounce clamshell containers from Oct. 14-Nov. 1 at stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts.

The salad mixes originated from the supplier State Garden Inc., based in Chelsea, Mass. Initial testing indicated that only salads with a use by date of Oct. 23 were affected, but Wegmans expanded the recall for all dates of the product out of caution.

Wegmans is working with state and federal agencies to confirm the origins of the E. coli outbreak.
