PMA Gets Fruits, Vegetables Into Math Curriculums

NEWARK, Del. — The Produce Marketing Association is sponsoring a program designed to encourage third and fourth graders to eat more fruits and vegetables while they’re learning math. Designed by Scholastic Inc., the program, “Crunch the Numbers,” meets national standards for third and fourth grade math curriculums. Lesson plans include math problems that incorporate addition, subtraction and fractions using fruits and vegetables. For example, in a typical lesson plan, the retail prices for a variety of vegetables are listed with colorful graphics. A math problem may be presented, asking what the total would be if a student bought an apple, a pear and a banana, and how much change he or she would get from a $10 bill. PMA is providing a contribution over four years to Produce for Better Health Foundation’s (PBH) Campaign for Children’s Health to create and distribute the program. It has been distributed this month to teachers across the United States.
