WILMINGTON, Del. — With an eye toward maintaining fresh fruit and vegetable sales in a challenging economy, the Produce for Better Health Foundation here has made household budgets the theme of this year's National Fruits & Veggies — More Matters Month. The program, “Stretch Your Food Budget with Fruits & Veggies,” is providing retailers with various tools designed around this theme to help move produce in September.

New retail advertising tools feature a variety of planning, shopping and preparation tips that illustrate how fruits and vegetables can easily fit into a tight budget. These toolkits include: three different consumer columns that are perfect for circulars, newsletters or wellness magazines; 10 different ad slicks that each feature a unique tip to help people get more value for the money they spend on fruits and vegetables; ready-to-print POS sign templates; and a press release template that communicates the value of fruits and veggies. With the press release, retailers can simply insert their company names and contact information and distribute to the local media. All of these materials are available for download from pbhfoundation.org.

In addition, PBH is urging retailers and suppliers to take advantage of its free Fruits & Veggies — More Matters materials like PBH's seasonal marketing tools, Fruit & Veggie of the Month ad tools, and other toolkits tailored for retailers and suppliers.

There are also materials aimed at marketing produce to children, such as the “Take Your Child to the Supermarket” program and the “Supermarket School Tour” kit.

The month-long event “is an important celebration because it serves as an additional reminder to everyone that eating more fruits and vegetables really does matter,” PBH spokeswoman Jill Le Brasseur told SN.

“Eating fruits and veggies matters when trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, and may reduce the risk of many diseases … and Fruits & Veggies — More Matters Month keeps this information top of mind with consumers, showing them that your business is concerned about their health.”
