Safeway Puts Local Farmers in Spotlight

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway is providing an up-close-and-personal look at some of its local farmers.

As part of its “Fresh From Our Farmers” campaign, the retailer has posted an interactive map on its website that gives the location and description of its 150 local suppliers.

Also on the retailer’s website and Facebook page are video profiles of several local producers. In one video, Bill Zirkle of apple grower Rainier Farms, Selah, Wash., talks about the long-term partnership between his business and Safeway.

“Around 1966, we tried to find people that would buy our product. No one paid attention, except Safeway,” Zirkle says in the video. “They sent a buyer here. He was an icon. He was a tough old bird, but he was fair, and he knew fruit.”

Another video shows owners of corn grower G&S Farms, Brentwood, Calif., discussing how Safeway is its best customer.
