A&P Closes 3 FoodBasics Stores in N.J.

A&P here has confirmed that three locations of its fledgling FoodBasics hard discount banner have closed or will close shortly.

MONTVALE, N.J. — A&P here has confirmed that three locations of its fledgling FoodBasics hard discount banner have closed or will close shortly. A spokeswoman for the chain said the stores, located in Dumont, N.J., Glassboro, N.J., and Wallington, N.J., closed due to operational issues and did not indicate that the health of the FoodBasics chain overall was at risk, although the closings reduced the overall number of FoodBasics units to eight. The spokeswoman also confirmed the company recently shuttered SuperFresh locations in Newark, Del., and Bristol, Pa., and a Food Emporium store in Great Neck, N.Y. “These stores have been underperformers for quite some time, and despite the best efforts of our management and employees and our increased competitive and promotional programs, these stores were not able to generate satisfactory operating results,” the spokeswoman, Lauren LaBruno, told SN. The closings do not appear to be related to the addition of Pathmark to the A&P portfolio, observers told SN, noting that the retailer has yet to take action at several locations where it operates closely neighboring banners.
