Brookshire Brothers Cuts 47 Staffers

Brookshire Brothers said it reduced its corporate staff by 47 workers, following a cost-cutting study by an outside consulting firm.

LUFKIN, Texas — Brookshire Brothers here on Friday said it reduced its corporate staff by 47 workers, following a cost-cutting study by an outside consulting firm.

The cuts were made from the chain's corporate office, distribution center and bakery, according to a spokeswoman for the chain. Workers at the company's 72 supermarket locations and 30 convenience stores were not affected, the spokeswoman said.

"Many companies have been required to look at what they do well and where they can improve," the company said in a prepared statement. "This move is painful for all of us, but it will help us be more competitive in the long run."

The company will consolidate some of the positions and outsource others, according to a report in the Lufkin Daily News.
