California Labor Talks to Run Through Weekend

LOS ANGELES — Negotiators in Southern California were scheduled to continue bargaining through the weekend to iron out new contracts between seven locals of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons. The previous contracts, covering 65,000 union workers, expired March 7 but have been extended since, with talks continuing under the aegis of a federal mediator. Albertsons workers voted in March for their bargaining agents to call a strike with 72 hours’ notice, and Ralphs and Vons workers voted in similar fashion last month. Since those votes, talks have been held almost daily, except for a July 4 break, including weekend sessions late last month, as both sides seek to avoid a repeat of the 141-day work stoppage that occurred in late 2003 and early 2004.
