TORONTO — The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers is adding several new members as a result of the recent shutdown of the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors, a CFIG spokeswoman told SN Friday.

The CFIG, which represents about 4,000 independent grocery operators across Canada, is expected to announce the changes on Monday.

The CCGD, which historically represented the nation's largest, publicly owned supermarket operators — including Loblaw Cos., Metro and Sobeys — has folded up shop as of the end of February, according to a statement on its website.

Some of the largest members of the former trade association have joined the Retail Council of Canada, the CFIG spokeswoman explained.
