SAN FRANCISCO — Industrial developer Prologis here has confirmed plans to convert a Jersey City, N.J., landfill site into a new distribution center including a 345,000-square-foot automated warehouse for the Internet grocery distributor Peapod.
As reported previously in SN, officials of Peapod owner expect the new facility would open in 2014 and provide an efficient solution for grocery delivery in the New York metro area. Peapod currently delivers in the region through Ahold's Stop & Shop banner.
Peapod has been awarded $34.6 million in Urban Transit Hub Tax Credits approved by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.
Known as the Pulaski Distribution Center, the warehouse is located approximately three miles from New York City and the New Jersey Turnpike.

Since acquiring the 50-acre site in 2008, Prologis has worked in close partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to implement a development plan that returns the site to productive use and will result in permanent capping and closure of the landfill.
Once fully developed, the property will include a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, 880,000 square-foot logistics facility with the remaining land returned to green space.
