BIG Y TAPS GOMES, SCHNEIDER FOR VP POSTS

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y Foods has appointed Antonio F. Gomes to the position of vice president of marketing and corporate strategies, overseeing consumer research, database marketing, target marketing initiatives and corporate strategies. In addition, Phillip J. Schneider has been named vice president of sales, overseeing sales and procurement, advertising, and retail pricing for all sales departments. Both men report to Charles L. D'Amour, president of Big Y. Gomes' career with Big Y began in 1976 in the finance department, and he has also worked in real estate, marketing, buying and labor planning. Since 1998 he had been vice president of corporate strategies. Schneider began his career in the industry more than 44 years ago, including the first 22 at Stop & Shop. He also worked at Waldbaum's before joining Big Y in 1991 as director of grocery procurement. He most recently was vice president of Center Store.

FORMER BROOKSHIRE BROTHERS CFO JOINS RETAILER

ABILENE, Kan. — Donny Johnson has left his position as chief financial officer of Brookshire Brothers, based in Lufkin, Texas, and is joining Duckwall-ALCO Stores here effective Aug. 1. Johnson began at Brookshire Brothers in 1994; he became CFO and a director in 1997 and was promoted to executive vice president in 1998. Before joining Brookshire Brothers, he spent seven years at Scrivner Inc., a grocery wholesaler and retailer acquired by Fleming Cos. in 1994.

SANSOLO TO LEAVE FMI, REMAIN AS CONSULTANT

ARLINGTON, Va. — Michael Sansolo, senior vice president of Food Marketing Institute here, will leave FMI at the end of this month to become a consultant but will continue to work on FMI's Leadership Education Forum. That event, planned for May 4-6, 2009, in Dallas, is scheduled as the first in a series of alternate-year replacements for the traditional FMI Show. Sansolo will dedicate 50% of his time to the project, according to Karen Brown, senior vice president, FMI. Sansolo's other responsibilities at FMI, which included oversight of FMI's research, education and industry relations functions, will be assumed by Tim Hammonds, president and chief executive officer, FMI.
