SAFEWAY NAMES MINASI PRESIDENT OF MARKETING

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway here last week said it has promoted Michael R. Minasi to the newly created position of president of marketing. He reports to Steve Burd, the retailer's chairman, president and chief executive officer, along with the presidents of three other marketing functions at Safeway: Frank A. Calfas (marketing operations), Des Hague (perishables) and David Lee (non-perishables). Minasi had been senior vice president of marketing, overseeing advertising, brand management and marketing strategies, and had recently assumed responsibility for private-label marketing and online shopping. Minasi joined Safeway in 1996 from Toys “R” Us. In June, Brian Cornell, the former Safeway chief marketing officer and one of the architects of its “Ingredients for Life” campaign and its lifestyle store revamp, was named chief executive officer of craft retailer Michaels Stores, based in Irving, Texas.

FAMILY DOLLAR NAMES BROKAW VP, DECISION SUPPORT

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores here has named Timothy R. Brokaw vice president, decision support, reporting to Ken Smith, senior vice president and chief financial officer. Prior to joining Family Dollar, Brokaw spent 10 years in various roles with PEP Boys in Philadelphia.
