Fifteen Weeks, One Store

A brief outline of the events during construction of H-E-B's “Express Delivery” project that built a store in 100 days.

Following is a brief outline of the events during construction of H-E-B's “Express Delivery” project that built a store in 100 days.

Week 1

  • Lay out corners
  • Anchor bolts embedded
  • Footings installed

Week 2

  • Piers/beams/foundation completed for right side of the store
  • Underground plumbing 30% complete, being phased in as concrete pours

Week 3

  • Footings and pilasters for main body of store completed
  • Underground refrigeration completed
  • Underground plumbing 40% complete
  • Structural steel and decking 33% installed
  • Underground electrical 10% complete

Week 4

  • Steel decking completed
  • Site water loop installed
  • Underground gas and electric run

Week 5

  • Precast concrete wall panels 40% complete
  • Sub-slab for main freezer poured
  • Fire riser and domestic water mains installed
  • Modular interiors tested

Week 6

  • Underground electric and plumbing completed
  • Installation of precast concrete walls of main store completed; construction of entry towers begins
  • Gas installed
  • Dock levelers installed
  • Grease trap installed
  • Main electrical switchgear installed
  • Roof 50% complete

Week 7

  • Slab pours completed
  • Roof 90% complete
  • Main freezer installed; dairy cooler installation begins
  • Modular interior wall installation 20% complete
  • Exterior painting begins
  • Interior light installation started
  • Structural steel at entry towers begins

Week 8

  • Precast walls completed
  • Sprinkler piping completed
  • Refrigeration racks set
  • Transformer installed
  • Windows, exit/entry doors installed
  • Front canopy installation begins

Week 9

  • Roofs completed
  • Cooler/freezer installations completed
  • Epoxy flooring completed in bakery/deli; begins in grocery
  • Modular interior walls 80% complete
  • Entry doors completed
  • Permanent power ready
  • Refrigerated cases arrive and installation begins

Week 10

  • Permanent power activated
  • Exterior stone installation begins
  • Restroom plumbing fixtures and partitions installed
  • Lay-in ceilings installed
  • Equipment/fixture installation begins

Week 11

  • A/C units running
  • Exterior stone 80% complete
  • Main phone lines installed
  • Setting of fixtures in bakery, deli, meat, seafood, produce, floral and front end

Week 12

  • Exterior stone completed
  • Gas meter installed
  • Refrigeration rack and case start-up
  • Lighting dimming start-up
  • Cleaning and sealing of floors

Week 13

  • Gas to building
  • Seam roofing completed
  • Front sidewalk completed
  • Glass installation at entry towers completed
  • Fixture/equipment setting completed
  • Floors sealed and waxed
  • Parking lot paving begins

Week 14

  • Exterior signage installed
  • Cases and coolers running
  • Phone system installed
  • Remainder of sidewalk completed
  • Landscaping installed
  • Gondola installation begins

Week 15

  • Photo equipment installed
  • Computer system, scale management installed
  • Gondola installation continues
  • Signage installation

The store was turned over to operators following the completion of gondolas, signage and ice merchandiser installation, two weeks following the 15-week deadline. Two weeks after that — Dec. 15, 2004 — the store opened to the public.
