Food Lion Ads Challenge Wal-Mart on Price

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion here is challenging Walmart on a price basis in the Charlotte, N.C., market by running ads showing how much shoppers can save on items being promoted in a given week, the company told SN.

"The campaign reinforces Food Lion's low price offering for our Charlotte consumers," a company spokeswoman explained.  "Every week we run promotions that are among the lowest in the market, especially on fresh produce and quality meats."

The ads are a reversal of the price-comparison grocery ads that Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores has been running in markets around the country.

According to Food Lion's most recent ad, the mix of products at Food Lion would cost customers using the chain's MVP Rewards card $126.48, 17% less than Walmart's price of $152.52 for the same items .

"We want top remind our customers that we offer a variety of ways our customers can save money, including everyday low prices, convenient locations, fresh produce and qulity products in addition to in-store coupon kiosks," the spokeswoman added.
