CHESHUNT, England — Tesco here said Tuesday it was “encouraged” by the momentum at Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market — its U.S.-based division — during the fiscal first quarter, which ended May 31.

Though the company did not report specific dollar amounts, it said sales were up 21.9% (31.7% at constant exchange rates), while comparable-store sales rose 11.1%. Tesco said comps were driven by both increased customer counts and higher average tickets.

“Our new stores in Northern California have started strongly,” the company said in a statement, “with weekly sales per store of $150,000 in their first quarter.”
