NEW YORK -- FreshDirect, a fresh food home delivery company serving the New York metro area, saw a huge increase in sales this holiday season, reflecting consumers' need for convenience as well as their desire for fresh products, said Steve Druckman, the company's chief marketing director. For the last three weeks of December, sales jumped 30% over the same period a year ago. "We're having a strong holiday season and expect that to continue through New Year's weekend," Druckman said. While the company expanded into some new areas this year, Druckman attributed such strong growth primarily to word of mouth. Ramped up menu variety has probably helped, too, he said. Top sellers, however, were old standards: the shrimp platter and standing rib roast dinner. -- Roseanne Harper
