Giant Eagle Trims Prices on 3,000 Items

PITTSBURGH Giant Eagle here said it is launching “its largest single everyday price reduction effort to date,” lowering prices on about 3,000 items by 15%.

The majority of lower everyday prices went into effect this week, with the remaining reductions taking place by April 11. The lowered everyday prices are on a variety of national and Giant Eagle brand dairy, frozen food and processed meat products, as well as grocery items such as cereal, yogurt, condiments, pastas, boxed dinners, canned vegetables, and paper and laundry products.

The price reductions are indicated with yellow “New Lower Price” tags.

The move follows a series of “price freezes” that retailers in the region — including Wegmans Food Markets and Weis Markets — have been implementing to communicate value to their cash-strapped customers.

In addition, Giant Eagle said it will donate an additional 500,000 meals to regional food banks. The incremental donation builds on the 5 million meals the company said it and its suppliers donate annually.
