CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food Stores here on Wednesday will hold the official opening of its first store in the city of Philadelphia.

The 74,000-square-foot store will feature Giant’s new decor package, on-site fuel and specialty departments including what Giant said was its largest kosher selection.

The retailer overcame opposition from organized labor groups to develop the store, located at the site of a former Penn Fruit bakery on Grant Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. The Mummers String Band and the Philly Phanatic are scheduled to appear at grand opening ceremonies.

“Over the last 25 years, we have been honored to serve customers in the greater Philadelphia suburbs and today we are excited to make our official entrance into the city of Philadelphia community,” Rick Herring, president of Giant, said in a statement.

Giant, a division of Ahold, operates more than 180 stores.
