CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant-Carlisle here said it would convert the 15 Genuardi’s stores it acquired in the Philadelphia region to the Giant banner in three phases beginning this week.
Giant said it would close the Upper Gwynedd, West Chester, Huntingdon Valley, Jamison and Kennett Square stores Thursday and reopen them as Giant on July 8. A second group of stores (Lower Gwynedd, Wynnewood, Springfield, King of Prussia, Roslyn) will close as Genuardi’s July 5 and reopen July 15. Genuardi’s stores in Chalfont, Flourtown, Maple Glen, Langhorne and St. David’s will close July 12 and reopen July 22, Giant said.
All stores to be converted will receive updated refrigeration systems, new lighting and signs, and new paint.
Giant, a division of Ahold USA, received approval from the Federal Trade Commission on June 15 to proceed with the acquisition of the Genuardi’s. Giant said it offered nearly all of the 1,700 employees at those stores with employment, and that it would hire around 900 more part-time workers for the stores.
