MARRERO, La. — Sterling Farms, a new grocery store co-owned by actor Wendell Pierce, opened here Friday.

The store, located at a former Winn-Dixie, will cater to the largely low-income neighborhood and is the first of at least four grocery stores in the New Orleans area planned by Sterling Fresh Foods, owned by Pierce, a star of HBO series Treme and The Wire, along with businessman Troy Henry, and Jim Hatchett, a veteran of the grocery industry including management positions at the Save More, Buy Low, and Central Food chains.

The Marrero store will offer a full range of supermarket products, a pharmacy, and a bakery featuring recipes from the actor Dwight Henry. Customers who spend $50 or more will have access to the company’s Sterling Shuttle Service for transportation home.
