OKLAHOMA CITY — A large distribution center here operated by Associated Wholesale Grocers was without power for two days last week because of the major ice storm that ripped through the Midwest, according to local sources.

The shutdown backed up deliveries for independents throughout the region, said Ron Edgmon, president of the Oklahoma Grocers Association. AWG could not be reached for comment.

Edgmon said about 30-35 stores around the state were still without power as of late last week because of the storm, which left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity as the ice toppled trees onto power lines.

“It seems like Missouri and Oklahoma have taken the brunt of it, [and] we've had stores in Missouri and in Iowa that have been affected,” said Rich Niemann Jr., chief executive officer, Niemann Foods, Quincy, Ill. “We've had two or three power outages, but none of the two-week, 10-day kind of things that some other companies have had.”
