Mariano's, Meijer Marketplace Open In Chicago

Meijer Inc. is opening its new Meijer Marketplace concept just two days after Roundy's Supermarkets opened its third Chicago-area Mariano's Fresh Market — its first within Chicago city limits.

MELROSE PARK, Ill. — Meijer Inc. is opening its new Meijer Marketplace concept in this Chicago suburb Thursday, just two days after Roundy's Supermarkets opened its third Chicago-area Mariano's Fresh Market — its first within Chicago city limits.

As previously reported, the new Meijer format measures 90,000 square feet — about half the size of its supercenters — and will feature a full grocery offering and pharmacy.

"Meijer is thrilled to bring our newest store concept to this great community," said Hank Meijer, co-chairman and chief executive officer of the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer. "Our team has worked very hard to bring the great Meijer experience to our new customers in the Melrose Park area, and we're very proud to join this vibrant neighborhood."

Meijer said it will present a check for $25,000 to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church to support local youth programs and the Parish's food bank.

Milwaukee-based Roundy's meanwhile, had previously opened two Mariano's stores in Vernon Hills and Arlington Heights, Ill. The stores are named after Bob Mariano, Roundy's chairman and CEO, who previously ran Chicago's Dominick's chain.
