Nash Finch Posts Retail Gains

Nash Finch Co. yesterday posted its first same-store sales gains in several quarters, with an increase of 0.3% for the 12-week second quarter that ended June 16.

MINNEAPOLIS — Nash Finch Co. here yesterday posted its first same-store sales gains in several quarters, with an increase of 0.3% for the 12-week second quarter that ended June 16. The company projected declines of 2% or more in the third quarter, however, as the stores project several competitive openings, including two Wal-Mart Supercenters. Distribution profitability increased significantly in the quarter, which the company attributed to cost controls, better promotion management and other factors. Net income for the company as a whole rose 132%, to $9.61 million, on flat sales of $1.06 billion. For the first half, net income was up 86%, to $14.9 million, on flat sales of $2.1 billion.
