N.J. Union Reaches Agreement With Chains

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. — United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 464A here has reached a tentative agreement with Foodtown, Pathmark, ShopRite and Stop & Shop, John T. Niccollai, president of the local, told SN. The 55-month contract calls for journeyman butchers to get wage increases of $107 over the term of the contract, progressing to a weekly salary of $1,101, and journeyman clerks to get increases of $100 over the term, moving to $968 a week. Over the course of the contract, butchers not at the top rate will get an additional $35 a week; clerks an additional $20 a week, and part-time workers will receive wage increases of $1.75 an hour, while retirees and those close to retirement after 35 or 40 years of service will get an additional $50 a month, Niccollai said. The union was also able to negotiate retention of a no co-pay policy on health and welfare programs, he added. Membership votes on the new offer will be counted Aug. 31. Local 464A represents around 7,500 workers.
