Safeway, UFCW Still Talking

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Safeway and United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 5 are continuing to meet this week after failing to reach a final agreement over the weekend, according to the union here.

"After a full week of continuous negotiations with Safeway, it became clear to the negotiating teams on both sides that reaching a final agreement over the weekend was unlikely and bargaining ended [late] Friday night," the union said on its website. "While important progress was made, Safeway and the unions remain apart on several important issues, including funding of the health benefit plan and full-time job protections."

The union said the two sides planned to schedule additional meetings later this week. The contract under discussion would replace one that expired at the end of October 2011.
