The store, to be built at a long-abandoned site in the Howard Park neighborhood, will be owned and operated by Klein’s Family Markets, which opened a ShopRite in nearby Parkville last year. The store is scheduled to open next year.

The Klein family has acquired the land for the supermarket project, as well as the necessary financing through a partnership of The Reinvestment Fund, City First Bank, the US Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s New Markets Tax Credit program, JP Morgan Chase Bank and the Opportunity Finance Network.

The development will also be assisted by UpLift Solutions, a non-profit created to help supermarkets open in locations that lack access to healthy and affordable food. This project was also recognized by Michelle Obama as part of her “Let’s Move” initiative, Wakefern said.
