Simpson, Bowles to Speak at 2013 NGA Convention

ARLINGTON, Va. — The National Grocers Association here said Monday the speakers at the opening session of its national convention next February will be Alan Simpson, former U.S. senator from Wyoming, and Erskine Bowles, former White House chief of staff under President Clinton.

The two men served as co-chairs of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform in 2010, which produced a plan to reduce the nation's deficit by $4 trillion over the next decade.

"During a time when our country continues to be in dire fiscal straits, Simpson and Bowles remained steadfast in their dedication [as co-chairmans of the commission]," said Peter Larkin, NGA president and chief executive officer. "Their ability to find bold, bipartisan recommendations to cut the national deficit and establish tax reform was unprecedented. With another recession looming — if appropriate legislative measures are not immediately implemented by Congress — NGA is honored to have such fiscal stalwarts addressing important economic issues."

The convention is scheduled for Feb. 10-13 at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.
