Spartan Tests Discount Format

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Spartan Stores here is quietly testing consumer acceptance of a limited-assortment discount format called Valu Land at select sites in Michigan.

The stores have opened at former Glen’s Markets sites in Claire and Marion and at a former Family Fare store in Leslie, last month. A fourth Valu Land store is set to open shortly in Lansing, a company spokeswoman told SN Wednesday.

The spokeswoman, Jeanne Norcross, said the company would provide further details in the coming weeks.

Published advertisements said Valu Land provides “unmatchable values” with everyday low prices and a guarantee to beat competitors prices on featured items, including milk at $2.24 per gallon and bananas at 47 cents per pound. The stores carry a mix of branded goods and items under the Spartan and Valu Time private labels.
