Stop & Shop Buys Foodmaster Site

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop here said it has acquired the lease of a Johnnie’s Foodmaster store in Medford, Mass., and that it would convert the store to the Stop & Shop banner before the end of the year.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Foodmaster, based in Chelsea, Mass., previously announced an agreement to sell six of its 10 stores to Whole Foods. Reports said last week that Foodmaster has begun liquidation sales at the three stores that were not sold to Whole Foods or Stop & Shop. Those stores — in Lynne, Whitman and Somerville, Mass. — are expected to close.

Stop & Shop, a division of Ahold USA, said it intended to offer all Medford Foodmaster employees the opportunity to apply for jobs with Stop & Shop.
