VALHALLA, N.Y. — Careers For People With Disabilities, a local group that seeks to find jobs for people with disabilities, recently presented its Supervisor of the Year Award to Jamie Smith, a store manager at a Stop & Shop in Port Chester, N.Y.

Smith hired six Careers clients last year, the organization said. They were among the 110 Careers clients that were hired in 2008.

“Especially in this difficult economy, we are proud that 110 of our clients were placed in jobs last year and that less than 1% of our clients have been laid off in the past year,” said Tina Cornish-Lauria, executive director, Careers.

The award was presented at the 13th Annual Anniversary Celebration event for the organization, which serves Westchester and Putnam counties in New York.

Other award recipients included Wal-Mart Stores, based in Bentonville, Ark., which received an Award of Appreciation for a grant it provided to help fund Careers' Workforce Readiness, Placement and Training program. Costco Wholesale, based in Issaquah, Wash., also received an Award of Appreciation.

Keasbey, N.J.-based ShopRite Supermarkets and Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo were among the event's sponsors.
