Stop & Shop Raises $1.24 Million to Fight Hunger

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. raised a record $1.24 million in this year’s Food for Friends campaign.

QUINCY, Mass. — The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. here raised a record $1.24 million in this year’s Food for Friends campaign. “Not only have we been able to support food banks and hunger relief agencies across our trade area through Food for Friends, but we’ve been able to raise the most in the history of the program at a time when food pantries are seeing their reserves dwindle,” Stop & Shop’s president and chief executive officer, José Alvarez, said in a statement. Now in its 18th year, the program supports local and regional food pantries in the Northeast. From Oct. 26 to Nov. 29, Stop & Shop stores sold paper turkeys at checkout in $1, $3, and $5 denominations. The turkeys could be personalized by each customer and were displayed throughout the store. Some of the total funds raised will go to local food pantries handpicked by store associates, with the remainder going to state and regional hunger relief agencies.
