BOSTON — U.S. retailers, particularly those in California, Arizona and Nevada, where British retail giant Tesco will begin opening stores next month, may want to keep an eye on their better store managers, warned Mike Griswold, research director for AMR Research here. “Tesco will be opening between 100 and 250 stores by the middle of next year, and their store managers are going to come from somewhere,” he said. “So they’ll be looking to lure away good store managers from food retailers to work for Tesco.” He expects the British retailer to “pay top dollar” for store managers. Consequently, he advised food retailers to listen to their top managers and see that they “have a good career path and are well taken care of.” It’s preferable to keep current managers happy rather than get into a “bidding war,” he said.
