Tesco to Employ 'Customer Assistants’ at U.S. Stores

Tesco will operate each of its Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets with three-person management staff, including manager, a team leader and a “customer assistant” whose main job will be “to ensure that customers are delighted,” according to reports published in the Financial Times of London.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Tesco will operate each of its Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets with three-person management staff, including manager, a team leader and a “customer assistant” whose main job will be “to ensure that customers are delighted,” according to reports published in the Financial Times of London. This approach, the newspaper said, reflects an attempt by Tesco to keep staff costs competitive while creating a positive and distinct in-store experience for customers. The newspaper cited published ads seeking customer assistants that say their role will be to keep customers informed about products and special offers and to be responsible for rotating and date-checking food and keeping aisles clear and tidy. The customer assistant will also be the main conduit for customer feedback, and they will be encouraged to make recommendations. “When you talk, we will listen,” the newspaper quoted the ads as saying. Store employees will consist of a part-time work force, the newspaper reported.
