UFCW Cites Progress With Safeway in Calif.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 5 here said Monday the union and Safeway "are both committed to working toward a final contract agreement this week."

Negotiators for both sides met all day Friday and Saturday, with another meeting scheduled for Monday, and the union said they had made "significant progress" toward a new contract to succeed the one that expired last October.

According to the union, talks are focused on the funding and design of a new health plan, plus several language issues.

The UFCW reached contract agreement with Save Mart Supermarkets, Modesto, Calif., earlier this month; it remains at an impasse with West Sacramento-based Raley's.
